Former President John Dramani Mahama has taken a jab at Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), asserting that their goal to ‘break the 8’ is unattainable.
According to Mahama, who serves as the flagbearer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), his placement in the 8th position on the Electoral Commission’s ballot symbolises divine intervention, positioning him as the rightful figure associated with the number 8.
Speaking at a campaign rally, Mahama confidently declared that he now holds control over the number 8, suggesting that the NPP’s ambition to secure a third consecutive term has been undermined.
His comments were aimed at the NPP’s popular slogan of ‘breaking the 8,’ which signifies their quest to extend their time in power beyond the traditional two terms.
Mahama’s remarks reflect the competitive political atmosphere as the 2024 elections draw nearer, with both major parties vying for the support of the electorate.
Ghana is set to hold its general elections on 7 December 2024, during which both the President and Parliament members will be elected.
The presidential election will follow a two-round system, while the 275 seats in Parliament will be filled through first-past-the-post voting in single-member constituencies.
Eligible voters must be Ghanaian citizens who are at least 18 years old, although those legally classified as insane are barred from voting.
Parliamentary candidates must be citizens of Ghana, at least 21 years old, and either reside in the constituency they wish to represent or have lived there for a minimum of five out of the last ten years.
