Sefwi Akontombra youth have made a strong stand to save their lands and water sources from the destruction brought about by illegal mining operations.
Taking matters into their own hands, they stopped a truck carrying large amounts of fuel that was being transported to an unlicensed mining operation.
The young people grabbed the fuel and gave it to the police, demonstrating their commitment to fighting the evil of illicit mining in their neighborhood.
Their bravery comes at a time when worries about the harm illegal mining operations, or galamsey, are causing to the environment and public health are intensifying throughout Ghana.
The news was shared by @eddie_wrt on X platform. Whilst others praised the youth for the bravey, others thought it was of no use since the police are likely to hand over the fuel back to the mining site.
Below are the post and video as shared plus reactions:
Fuel belonging to illegal mining site siezed by youth
“The youths of Sefwi Akontombra say that they will not allow illegal miners to continue destroying their lands and water bodies. They intercepted a vehicle loaded with volumes of fuel heading to an illegal mining site and seized the fuel, handing it over to the police. The Member of Parliament (MP) for Sefwi Akontombra has consistently supported the youth’s decision to end galamsey, as evidenced by his donation of GHS1,000 to support demonstrators.”
@bustopboys – Arise Ghana youth for your country
@JackiMajestical – This is what we must all know, leaders can’t fight this alone, we civilians must unite ourselves and fight against illegal activities in this nation..Leaders must support as well
@championKwaku – The sad part is the police station will hand over the seized items back to the owners and business goes on. I suggest the pour it away next time or share it amongst themselves.
@kwaku_freeman – Sad reality is that as soon as it gets to the police station, the owners will go for it and business will continue as usual. Finished kentry.
@1GadaGh – This the anger the you needs to exhibit, not some leaked videos. The youth did well.
