The Managing Director of Arima Farms Limited, Saalai Manikam, has stated that the primary focus of the Ghana Wheat programme, a collaborative initiative, is to reduce Ghana’s reliance on imports and create meaningful employment opportunities for Ghanaian farmers.
The project is being piloted with improved seed varieties, modern irrigation systems and strong strategic partnerships in the Ashanti Region.
Speaking at the Manhyia Palace during the third Awukudae Festival on April 8, 2026, she hailed Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, for his support.
“Your Majesty, we are deeply grateful for your support, visionary leadership and steadfast commitment to agricultural transformation. With your guidance and counsel, we are confident that this programme will achieve a lasting impact on Ghana.”
On the programme, she said the initiative is designed to establish sustainable wheat production.
“We aim to build a resilient, efficient and productive agricultural system. Together, we look forward to a successful and transformative wheat programme that will benefit generations to come.”
The programme is being undertaken in collaboration with the Crops Research Institute of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR-CRI) and the Asante Kingdom Development Foundation.
The Asante Kingdom Development Foundation, a technical Committee established to drive development in Asanteman, requested the permission of Otumfuo to name the first variety of wheat crop after him.
They also requested the intervention of the King to have the Agricultural Minister grant the needed varieties for the commercial production of wheat.
