President John Dramani Mahama has assured Ghanaians that his administration is making steady progress in addressing outstanding debts in the road construction and maintenance sector.
Speaking during the 2026 State of the Nation Address, he said sustained efforts are underway to reduce financial liabilities owed to contractors and service providers.
“We are steadily clearing road sector debt,” President Mahama emphasised, noting that prioritising payments to contractors forms part of broader measures to strengthen infrastructure delivery.
Restoring Confidence in the Sector
The President explained that clearing these obligations is essential to restoring confidence in the construction industry and ensuring the timely completion of ongoing road projects nationwide.
He indicated that his government inherited significant financial arrears in the road sector, which had slowed project execution and weakened public trust.
Through disciplined budgeting and prudent resource allocation, he said, the administration is systematically settling outstanding obligations to contractors, suppliers, and other stakeholders.
Signs of Progress
According to President Mahama, efforts to address the debts are already yielding positive results, with construction activity gathering momentum and new projects being launched without undue delays.
He urged continued patience and cooperation as the government works to fully normalise payments while maintaining fiscal responsibility.
The President reiterated his administration’s commitment to modernising Ghana’s road network, improving transport efficiency, and ensuring that public infrastructure projects deliver tangible benefits, support economic growth, and create jobs across the country.
