Hamza Suhuyini, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communications team, has stated that the party warned the New Patriotic Party (NPP) against electing Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as its flagbearer in 2007.
According to him, the NDC cautioned that choosing Akufo-Addo could spell doom not only for the NPP but for the country as a whole.
He said the NPP at the time dismissed those concerns, accusing the NDC of engaging in propaganda aimed at preventing Akufo-Addo from getting close to the presidency.

“In 2007, when the NPP met in Legon to elect their flagbearer, many of us in the National Democratic Congress cautioned that an election of Nana Akufo-Addo could spell doom not just for the New Patriotic Party but for the country as a whole.
“They attacked the NDC for engaging in all manner of propaganda simply to prevent Akufo-Addo from getting close to the presidency,” he remarked.
He further alleged that following his election, Akufo-Addo transformed the party into a political tradition alien to its founding principles.

According to him, the party gradually became Akufo-Addo’s “personal political backyard”, with its direction shaped not by the Busia-Danquah tradition but by what he described as Akufo-Addo’s parochial and personal ambitions during the party’s eight years in opposition.
