The Health Ministry says it is working to resolve issues that have delayed the operationalisation of the Weija Paediatric Hospital following a demonstration at the facility on May 5, 2026.
In a statement, the Ministry said the hospital is a World Bank-funded project that began in 2023 and was expected to be completed by December 2025.
According to the Ministry, the project ran into difficulties in 2024 after the World Bank raised concerns over misprocurement.
The concerns, it said, involved inflated medical equipment costs, with some items priced at nearly 11 times their actual value.
As a result, the World Bank declined to settle all outstanding payments on the project.
The Ministry said it had engaged relevant stakeholders and was preparing to commission the facility for use.
However, that process was halted after the contractor insisted that all outstanding issues be fully resolved before access to the hospital could be granted.
The Ministry said it is actively engaging all parties to resolve the matter in the public interest.
It also stressed the importance of the facility to Ghana’s healthcare system, particularly in the delivery of specialised care for children.
The Ministry assured the public of its commitment to ensuring the full operationalisation of the Weija Paediatric Hospital.
It appealed to residents of Weija and the general public to remain patient while efforts continue to make the hospital fully operational.
