Hajia Amina Adam is the widow of the late Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East
Claims have surfaced from members of the Majority Caucus of Parliament and the presidency that Hajia Amina Adam, the widow of the late Member of Parliament (MP) for Ayawaso East, would be the party’s choice as candidate in the upcoming by-election for the constituency.
Collins Adomako-Mensah, MP for Afigya Kwabre North, one of the proponents of this claim, referred to a statement issued by the Majority Caucus calling for the annulment of the election and a directive from the Office of the President ordering the recall of Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Baba Jamal, who had won the primaries.
A video has now emerged showing some members of the Majority Caucus openly declaring their support for Hajia Amina Adam when they visited her at her home to commiserate with her.
In the video, members of the caucus can be heard assuring Hajia Adam that she was going to win the primaries. MP Isaac Ashai Odamtten is heard saying, “We are waiting for her in this 9th Parliament, we are waiting for her.”
“Insha Allah, she is coming,” a woman could also be heard saying, as the widow wipes tears from her face.
About the Ayawaso East Primaries
Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed emerged as the winner of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primaries in the Ayawaso East Constituency.
According to the final results, Baba Jamal secured 431 votes, defeating his closest contender, Hajia Amina Adam, who polled 399 votes. Mohammed Ramne obtained 88 votes, Dr Yakubu Azimdow garnered 45 votes, and Najib Sani received one vote.
The primaries, which attracted more than 1,100 accredited delegates from across the constituency, were held amid reports of alleged inducement and vote-buying.
In a statement issued on Saturday, February 7, 2026, the NDC confirmed it had been notified of incidents of vote-buying and inducement involving some aspirants.
“The attention of the national executives of the NDC has been drawn to the widespread incidents of inducement and vote-buying allegedly perpetrated by senior aspirants at the primaries in the Ayawaso East constituency today,” the statement said.
The party subsequently set up a committee to investigate the allegations. While the committee’s report acknowledged that some contenders acted wrongly, it did not recommend a rerun of the election due to the deadline for presenting a candidate for the by-election.
The report also noted that the party’s constitution does not specify procedures for handling such issues.
Baba Jamal will now represent the NDC in the March 3 parliamentary by-election.
