Veteran politician and former Chief of Staff, Kwadwo Mpiani, has taken aim at Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s ongoing “Thank You” tour, calling it both ill-timed and pointless in light of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) massive loss in the 2024 general elections.
Speaking during an appearance on JoyNews’ The Pulse on April 29, Mpiani questioned the logic behind the tour, sarcastically asking whether the party was thanking Ghanaians for rejecting them at the polls.
He argued that rather than celebrating or showing appreciation, the party should be introspecting and fixing the problems that led to its downfall.
“This is not the right time to be touring the country in gratitude,” he said.
“With such a dismal performance in the last election, the priority should be to understand why we failed, not to pretend everything is fine.”
His comments come even as Dr. Bawumia, the NPP’s 2024 presidential candidate, embarks on a national tour aimed at reconnecting with supporters and rallying the base ahead of the 2028 polls.
The party has said the initiative is meant to rebuild momentum and show appreciation to grassroots supporters and campaigners.
However, Mpiani doesn’t buy it. He believes that before any re-energizing efforts, the party must first come to terms with the reasons for its poor showing.
He pointed out that a special 12-member committee—chaired by former Speaker of Parliament Prof.
Mike Oquaye—was set up to probe the causes of the defeat, and that should be the focus, not publicity tours.
The findings from the committee’s report, however, remain under wraps, as the party has declined to release the contents to the public.
Mpiani’s blunt critique adds to growing internal tensions within the NPP as it attempts to regroup and reposition itself for the future.
