Former U.S. President Donald Trump has announced intentions to pursue legal action against Google if he secures victory in the upcoming 2024 presidential election.
He claims that the search engine employs an unlawful system designed to showcase negative stories about him while highlighting positive narratives about Vice President Kamala Harris, his opponent in the race.
In a recent post on Truth Social, Trump asserted that Google has been selectively displaying unfavorable articles about him, some of which he believes are fabricated, while exclusively featuring beneficial stories about Harris.
He characterized this as a breach of legal conduct and expressed hope that the Justice Department would initiate criminal prosecution against the tech giant for what he described as interference in the electoral process.
Trump indicated his plans to urge the Justice Department to take action against Google, although he did not specify which legal statutes he believed had been violated.
He stated that if he were to win the election and reclaim the presidency, he would seek maximum prosecution against the company for what he considers egregious electoral interference.
His remarks appear to be influenced by claims from the conservative Media Research Center, which conducted a study suggesting that Google’s search algorithms favour Harris over Trump. This study received attention from right-leaning media outlets.
In response, a Google representative refuted these allegations, emphasizing that the company does not show bias toward any candidate.
They pointed out that the study in question relied on a singular, uncommon search term from one specific day, and both candidates’ official websites appeared among the top results for that search.
Trump’s latest statements reflect his ongoing inclination to leverage federal power against what he perceives as adversaries, having previously suggested legal repercussions for various political rivals, including Harris, President Joe Biden, and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
