Actor and Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency, John Dumelo, has expressed a dissenting view on the ideal candidate for the position of Minister of Arts and Tourism.
While many industry players believe that the minister should come from the creative industry, Dumelo argues that competence and vision are more important.
According to Dumelo, the responsibility of the Minister goes beyond the industry, and what is more important is to be visionary and seek the welfare of the players in the industry.
“Who can best represent the ideals and goals, and equally understand the policies of the sector? That’s what is important to me, and not whether the person is a creative or not,” he stated.
Dumelo’s comments come after some industry players expressed disappointment with the performance of Deputy Minister Mark Okraku Mantey, who was appointed in 2021.
Okraku Mantey, a music producer, was widely welcomed by industry players who thought he would bring much-needed attention to the industry.
However, some players have since expressed disappointment with his performance, with some accusing him of being inaccessible and ineffective.
Ghanaian musician Kelvyn Boy took to Twitter to express his disappointment, stating that Okraku Mantey had grown “awfully silent” on industry issues since his appointment.
Media personality Kofi Okyere Darko, also known as KKD, echoed similar sentiments, stating that Okraku Mantey had forgotten why he was elevated to the position and had failed to be a mouthpiece for the industry.
Despite these criticisms, Dumelo remains adamant that the Minister of Arts and Tourism should be chosen based on their competence and vision, rather than their industry background.
