The project is designed to provide a faster alternative to the existing Accra-Kumasi highway

The Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has said the government is deliberately taking its time with the proposed Accra–Kumasi Expressway project to prevent design flaws and cost overruns that could derail implementation.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Super Morning Show, the minister explained that the government is currently undertaking comprehensive feasibility studies, detailed designs and accurate costing for the nearly 200-kilometre stretch, before any contractor is allowed to move to site.

According to him, the approach is intended to ensure transparency and avoid future revisions to the project cost once it is presented to the public.

“We want to take time to make sure that when we come out and say we need X amount of money to build the about 200km from Accra to Kumasi, we don’t come back and tell you that we want to double that money simply because we made a mistake,” Agbodza said.

He noted that rushing the process without proper technical preparation could result in avoidable financial and logistical challenges during construction.
