A medical officer at the Asunafo South District Hospital, Dr Abdallah, has opened up about the difficult conditions he encountered after accepting a posting to the facility, citing inadequate infrastructure and a shortage of essential medical supplies.
According to a report by adomonline.com on February 4, 2026, Dr Abdallah described Asunafo South as a district that continues to struggle to attract healthcare professionals, despite the hospital’s upgrade from a health centre to a district hospital about seven years ago.
“It used to be just a health centre. It was only about seven years ago that a doctor arrived, and the facility was elevated to a district hospital. But a lot of infrastructure is still missing, and it can be frustrating working here,” he said.
Dr Abdallah disclosed that when he reported to the hospital in 2023, the facility had very few doctors and lacked the equipment needed to cope with the increasing number of patients.
He explained that he received his medical training at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), where he also completed his housemanship, before working at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra.

He said he was later encouraged by a regional director to accept a posting to the Ahafo Region.
“I was told the place was nice and that things were good, so I should come. But when I arrived, the situation was the opposite,” he recounted.
The poor working conditions, he said, nearly forced him to leave the district.
“I actually wanted to go back because of the infrastructure and medical supply issues,” he admitted.
However, Dr Abdallah said he was persuaded to stay after encouragement from his mother, as well as his commitment to teaching at the Makaranta.
“My mother advised me to remain, and because I also teach at the Makaranta, I rescinded my decision,” he explained.
Despite the challenges, Dr Abdallah said he has chosen to remain at the hospital out of a sense of duty to the people.
“It is not easy, but the people still need care, and someone has to stand in the gap,” he added.
