Ghanaian dancehall artist Shatta Wale has publicly criticized the youth for pressuring him to comment on the recent arrests of Democracy Hub protestors, who were detained for pushing for government accountability under the #FreeTheCitizens movement.
The demonstration, aimed at calling for better leadership in the country, resulted in multiple arrests, and social media users quickly urged the outspoken artist to join the conversation.
In a series of voice notes posted on X (formerly Twitter), Shatta Wale expressed his frustration at being dragged into the debate, stating that he has no desire to participate.
He emphasized that many of the same people now calling on him had failed to support him in the past when he spoke out against societal issues.
Reflecting on earlier criticisms, the artist recalled instances where he had highlighted flaws in the entertainment industry, only to be dismissed and accused of jealousy towards other musicians.
The dancehall star further criticized the youth for being easily influenced by individuals who, according to him, prioritize their personal interests over the collective good.
Shatta Wale made it clear that he prefers to stay out of the social media campaign surrounding the protests.
He also expressed his belief that the protestors were not committed to their cause and declared himself “untouchable” within the entertainment industry due to his consistent outspokenness.
This response from Shatta Wale has sparked additional discussions about the role of influential figures in advocating for societal change and the complex relationship between fame, public responsibility, and activism in Ghana.
Forty-two protesters were arrested on the second day of a demonstration against illegal mining, which took place from September 21 to 23.
In total, over 50 individuals were arrested during and after the protest. According to a police statement, the demonstrators unlawfully assembled at the 37 Intersection and attacked police officers who were performing their duties.
The protesters allegedly entered a police vehicle, removed the ignition key, and threw it away, while also pushing down police crash barriers, obstructing traffic, causing damage, and disturbing the peace.
All of the arrested protesters were arraigned in court and denied bail, with a reappearance set for two weeks later.
