Some staff of the North East Gonja District Assembly in the Savannah Region have been compelled to work under a mango tree as the construction of the district’s office complex which was initiated in 2020 has stalled.
Since the district was carved out of East Gonja in 2019, only the top four officers, the District Chief Executive, District Coordinating Director, District Finance Officer, and District Planning Officer have dedicated office spaces.
Ghana’s ‘schools under trees’ crisis demands urgent action
All other staff conduct their daily work in the open air.
“This is where most of the staff who come to work sit for their daily schedules, sitting under the tree to do your daily routine is challenging for us. It brings low productivity in the districts, and then you have to be assessed alongside other districts, which doesn’t help.

“It’s a big challenge. When we come here, we sit throughout the morning till evening. Even when your laptop needs charging, you have to go around [to get it charged],” a staff member said in an interview on TV3 and monitored by GhanaWeb on Wednesday, February 25, 2026.
The District Chief Executive for the area, Abdul Mumin Ewuntomah stated that the situation has compelled officers to run a shift system.
“For now, my officers operate under the tree. Most of them, when they come, they don’t have spaces to sit in the offices. Because of that, some of them don’t even come,” he said.
