The Wikimedia Ghana User Group (WMGH) has launched the Wikipedia Highlife @ 100 Project, an initiative aimed at improving the online documentation and preservation of Highlife music as it marks its 100th anniversary.

Recognized by UNESCO as part of Ghanaʼs intangible cultural heritage, Highlife has been a key medium for storytelling and cultural expression for over a century. Despite its influence, much of Highlifeʼs history, its artists, and their contributions remain poorly documented on Wikipedia, with many biographies and important content either missing or incomplete.

The Wikipedia Highlife @ 100 project calls for volunteers, researchers and music enthusiasts to work together to create new articles, improve existing Highlife-related entries, and add multimedia content that helps document the genreʼs development over the past century. Initial project scoping conducted by WMGH community volunteers identified several notable figures and topics that remain undocumented.

As part of the project, WMGH has also launched a focused campaign in March 2026 to document notable women in Highlife who are underrepresented or entirely missing from Wikipedia. The Notable Women in Highlife campaign is being implemented through women-only online editathons running from March 5 to March 31, 2026, with editing sessions held every Tuesday and Thursday.

The initiative also includes the #FindHerHighlife Contest, which invites members of the public to submit the names of notable Ghanaian women in Highlife who do not already have a Wikipedia article. Selected submissions will qualify participants to receive internet data bundles. The contest is not limited to women.

Through the Wikipedia Highlife @ 100 Project, the Wikimedia Ghana User Group aims to strengthen documentation of Highlife music, preserve a century of Ghanaʼs musical heritage, and expand access to reliable information about the genre for audiences worldwide.
