Wilfred Ndidi has lost his father
Nigeria captain Wilfred Ndidi has been plunged into mourning following the tragic death of his father, Sunday Ndidi, in a fatal road accident in Nigeria.
Besiktas confirmed the heartbreaking news in an official statement on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, expressing their support for the midfielder during this difficult time.
“It is with great sadness that Sunday Ndidi, the precious father of our footballer Wilfred Ndidi, has passed away in a traffic accident. May God have mercy on the deceased; we send our condolences to our footballer Wilfred Ndidi, his family and relatives,” the Turkish club said.
According to reports, the accident occurred in Umunede, Delta State. Sunday Ndidi, a retired military officer, was rushed to hospital after the crash but was sadly pronounced dead.

The loss comes at a significant moment in Ndidi’s career. The Nigerian international only joined Besiktas at the start of the 2025/26 season, bringing an end to a memorable nine-year spell at Leicester City.
During his time in England, he became a key figure for the Foxes and was part of the squad that lifted the FA Cup in 2021.
On the international stage, Ndidi recently captained Nigeria to a third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, underlining his leadership role within the Super Eagles setup.
Beyond the football achievements, this is a deeply personal blow. Sunday Ndidi was widely regarded as a strong influence in his son’s life, having served his country in the military before retirement.
