A woman is in police custody after setting fire to the Alpha Hour Auditorium, the church of Pastor Elvis Agyemang, in Accra on Monday night.

The incident occurred during a quiet period at the auditorium when the suspect allegedly pretended to be praying. According to the CCTV footage, she was seen pouring petrol on chairs close to the altar and setting them ablaze.

The church’s security team responded swiftly, managing to contain the fire before it spread further. No injuries were recorded, and damage to the facility was limited.

Reacting to the incident, Pastor Elvis Agyemang announced the temporary suspension of all in-person prayer sessions at the auditorium.

He said the church would remain closed for now but stressed that the incident would not stop their activities.

“If you come here today, it will not be open, but it will not stop us. We will fix the place, and prayers will still go on,” he said.

Pastor Agyemang added that the attack was not the first security incident at the church.

“How many times have we not heard people say they heard something and rushed here to pray in the auditorium? That is what the devil does not like.

Last year, there was an incident where a woman spread powder on the altar, and we had to stop people from going close to it,” he added.

The suspect is currently in police custody as investigations are underway to determine her motive and whether she acted alone or with accomplices.

The police are treating the matter as a serious criminal case and will provide updates as the investigation progresses.
