Wontumi FM presenter Kofi Asare, who recently stirred controversy with comments blaming former President John Dramani Mahama for a fatal helicopter crash, has been taken into custody by security officials.
Footage from the arrest shows Asare in handcuffs being escorted to a police station by officers. Despite the detention, he appeared unfazed, loudly proclaiming his resilience and likening his strength to the New Patriotic Party’s elephant symbol.
He declared himself a “hero” and expressed confidence that he would soon be free, saying party support would see him through his current ordeal.
The arrest follows remarks made by Asare during a broadcast in which he alleged that Mahama and other leading members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) bore responsibility for the crash. He further urged families of the victims to hold the party accountable, even referencing General Secretary Johnson Asiedu Nketia in his claims.
The comments drew strong condemnation from NDC circles, prompting the National Security to act. Reports indicate that following his arrest and interrogation, Wontumi FM decided to terminate his employment.
The incident has added to political tensions already surrounding the Obuasi helicopter crash, with critics accusing the broadcaster of spreading unverified and inflammatory statements.
