Wontumi Radio and Television, owned by the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), is facing a suspension by the National Communications Authority (NCA) after one of its presenters made controversial on-air allegations linking former President John Dramani Mahama to the recent deadly military helicopter crash.
In a statement dated August 12, Wontumi TV’s management distanced the station from the claims made by co-host Akyenkwaa Nana Kofi Asare during an August 9 broadcast. The network issued what it described as a “sincere and unreserved apology” to President Mahama, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), and the Ghanaian public.
“The statement was inappropriate, unfounded, and contrary to our values of professionalism, accuracy, and fairness in broadcasting,” the communique read. “It was made without evidence and does not represent the views, policies, or editorial position of Wontumi TV.”
Wontumi Radio also issued a parallel apology, expressing regret over any distress or reputational harm caused to the former president, the NDC, and families affected by the tragedy.
The suspension comes amid heightened political sensitivity following the helicopter disaster, which claimed the lives of eight people, including two former cabinet ministers.
