Ghana’s historic debut at the Para Swimming World Series ended on a high note as Promise Aheto and Bryan Baffour both recorded personal bests at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre in Australia.
The duo departed Ghana on January 17 for the February 20–22 competition, marking the first time the nation has been represented at a major international para swimming event.
The trip, understood to have been funded by the Ghana Olympic Committee, represents a major milestone for the Para Swimming Association led by President Farida Iddriss, who assumed office in May 2025.
Both swimmers competed in the 50m Freestyle, 50m Breaststroke, and 100m Breaststroke events across the three-day championship.
On Day One, Promise opened his campaign in Heat 5 of the 100m Breaststroke, clocking 1:38.98, just one second shy of his personal best.
Bryan, also making his debut at the World Series, swam 2:11.90 in the 100m Breaststroke preliminaries.
Day Two saw Promise step up with a personal best of 40.55 in the 50m Breaststroke, finishing as second reserve for the finals while Bryan also clocked a time of solid 54.89s in the same event.
On the final day, Promise also smashed his previous 50m Freestyle personal best of 33.95 with a new time of 31.72.
Bryan also lowered his 50m Freestyle mark from 47.12 to 43.22, sealing Ghana’s campaign with a second personal best.
The contingent is expected to arrive back in Ghana on Tuesday.
