The Ghana Journalist Association (GJA) has condemned the recent incessant invitations for interrogation from the Police to journalists, particularly senior editors, over their publications.

At a presser on March 18, 2026, the GJA President, Albert Dwumfour, postulated that the development was stoking fear among practitioners.

Acknowledging the mandate of the Police to investigate matters of public interest, he expressed concerns over the growing pattern that risks creating an atmosphere of fear within the media landscape.

Citing a series of such invitations, Mr Dwumfour opined that persons who felt defamed by a publication must seek redress in the courts of law.

“Do not hide behind the security services under the pretext of fighting false publications to intimidate and harass journalists.”

He stressed that issues such as these were motivating consistent calls for the repeal of what is described as “repressive” sections of the Electronic Communications Act, 2008 (Act 775), and the Criminal and Other Offences Act.

According to him, these laws are often weaponised to arrest, intimidate, and muzzle journalists, thereby creating a climate of fear.
