Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, has destooled Nana Amofa Twumasi II, the chief of Mpasaaso No. 2, after he was found guilty of perjury and other serious offenses that undermined the integrity of his position.
The decision, announced on Monday, March 10, 2025, at the Kumasi Traditional Council meeting, also saw four of his stool elders removed from their positions.
The chief’s troubles began in 2024 when he served as a key witness in a chieftaincy dispute between the Ekuona and Aduana Clans over the Akrodie Stool.
Under oath, he testified in favor of the Aduana Clan. However, during the final ruling on October 15, 2024, Otumfuo revealed that the chief had been bribed to give false testimony.
The case remained unresolved until it was revisited at the Kumasi Traditional Council, where further allegations surfaced, exposing more violations of his oath.
Testimonies from the destooled Mpasaaso No. 2 queen mother and other community members painted a damning picture of the chief’s tenure.
The former queen, who has since been reinstated, accused him of mismanaging stool properties, failing to develop the town, and lacking legitimate royal lineage.
Among the accusations were:
- Ruling for 41 years despite not being of royal descent.
- Failing to develop Mpasaaso No. 2 or even build a palace for the community.
- Moving the black stools to his house instead of keeping them in their sacred space.
- Pocketing revenue from town resources such as tolls paid by timber truck drivers.
A townswoman, Frema, expressed outrage over his neglect of the black stools, stating that they had been left to deteriorate, with some breaking apart due to years of improper care. Another native, Kwame Tawiah, accused him of removing the stools under the guise of renovation, only for shops to be built on the land instead.
During the hearing, five stool elders from Mpasaaso were given the opportunity to speak on the matter. Four of them pleaded for leniency, but one admitted that the chief had violated his oath.
Given the weight of the offenses, the divisions of the Traditional Council collectively agreed that destoolment was the only course of action.
Before delivering his final judgment, Otumfuo detailed how Nana Twumasi received a car, money, and even had his entire house tiled in exchange for his false testimony. He questioned whether such a person should be allowed to continue holding a position of authority.
Otumfuo emphasized that truthfulness is the foundation of chieftaincy, warning that any chief who attempts to manipulate the truth for personal gain would not be spared under his leadership. He made it clear that Asanteman would not tolerate individuals who betray their oaths and disgrace the traditional institution.
Following the chief’s destoolment, Otumfuo reinstated the queen mother who had been unlawfully removed by Nana Twumasi. He directed her to begin traditional procedures to nominate a suitable candidate for the now-vacant stool.
