The President of Zonta Club of Accra II, Merley Wood, has presented GH¢5,600 to support the education of 20 brilliant, needy girls at the Teshie Salem Presbyterian A and B Primary Schools in Accra.
The amount will cater for uniforms, exercise books, extra classes and other educational needs of the beneficiaries.
The girls, all in Primary Four, were selected based on their academic performance under the club’s scholarship scheme, which will support them through to junior high school.
Presenting the cheques to the headmistresses of the schools, Ms Wood said the support formed part of the club’s commitment to empowering girls through education.
She said it was the third disbursement made to the schools under the scholarship programme.
Ms Wood explained that the club would continue to monitor the academic progress of the girls through mentoring and reading sessions to improve their performance.
She said members of the club interacted with the pupils during the visit and assessed their academic work by going through their exercise books.
Scholarship scheme
Ms Wood said the scholarship initiative was introduced about 11 years ago to support brilliant, underprivileged girls to pursue higher education.
She said the club had so far sponsored six girls to various universities across the country under the programme.
The club is a branch of Zonta International, a global organisation of women professionals and entrepreneurs that advocates the empowerment of women and girls through education and advocacy.
The headmistresses of the two schools expressed appreciation to the club for its continuous support for the pupils and pledged to ensure effective supervision of the beneficiaries.
