Actress Slams Insensitive Reporting After Z-9 Helicopter Disaster Kills Eight

Ghanaian actress and social commentator Lydia Forson has sharply criticised aspects of the media’s handling of the Ghana Armed Forces helicopter disaster that killed eight people on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

The Z-9 aircraft, which departed Accra at 9:12 a.m., went down near Sikaman in Adansi Akrofuom, Ashanti Region. Those on board included Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, MP Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, and six others.

Soon after the crash, disturbing photos and videos showing the wreckage and charred remains began circulating across social media and news outlets. The widespread sharing of such content has sparked renewed debate about journalistic ethics during national tragedies.

Posting on X (formerly Twitter), Forson expressed strong disapproval of what she called a “gory spectacle” around death. “The rush to post graphic images, shove cameras in grieving faces, and ‘break’ the news as if it’s some twisted competition for clicks — it’s disgusting,” she wrote.

Her comments have been echoed by many who believe media coverage should protect the dignity of victims and respect the privacy of grieving families. The Ghana Journalists Association has not yet commented, but the controversy has placed the spotlight back on responsible reporting practices.
