The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has scored a major victory against transnational vehicle crime, recovering ten stolen cars smuggled into the country.
Speaking at a press briefing in Accra, the Director-General of CID, COP Lydia Donkor, revealed that the breakthrough followed a joint operation between Ghanaian authorities, the Netherlands Embassy, and Digitpol, a private security firm working closely with Dutch police.
Between September 15 and 17, 2025, the collaborative team successfully traced the stolen vehicles to different parts of the capital, including Kantamanto, Nima, and Cantonments. The haul comprised eight Toyota RAV4 SUVs and two Toyota CH-Rs, all of which had been reported missing in the Netherlands.
COP Donkor stressed that such crimes not only inflict heavy financial losses on individuals but also tarnish Ghana’s global reputation and contribute to wider organized crime. She emphasized the need for international cooperation in curbing the illegal trade in stolen cars.
The Police also issued a strong advisory to Ghanaians purchasing vehicles locally. Buyers are urged to request proof of ownership from the country of origin and verify details with INTERPOL Accra before finalizing any deal.
In a statement, the Service assured the public that it will continue to work with foreign partners to dismantle transnational crime networks and protect unsuspecting buyers from falling victim to fraud.
