The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has intensified its aviation safety agenda with a strategic stakeholder engagement on wildlife hazard management within a 13-kilometre radius of Prempeh I International Airport.
The move is part of efforts to enhance operational safety and support the Ashanti Region’s readiness for expanded international aviation services.
Wildlife strikes, particularly bird strikes, pose significant risks to aircraft during takeoff and landing.
ICAO regulations require airport operators to assess and mitigate wildlife hazards within the airport environment and surrounding areas.
The stakeholder engagement brought together representatives from the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, local assemblies, traditional authorities, waste management companies, farmers, and communities within the 13km buffer zone.
Discussions focused on identifying wildlife attractants such as refuse dumps, open water bodies, abattoirs, and unregulated farming practices that increase bird activity near the flight path.
The GACL outlined plans for continuous monitoring, habitat modification, and public education to reduce wildlife incursions.
The company also called for stricter enforcement of land use and sanitation by-laws around the airport.
The initiative comes as Prempeh I International Airport prepares to scale up international operations following its recent upgrade.
Enhanced safety protocols are critical to attracting more airlines and ensuring compliance with international aviation standards.
The Company said sustained collaboration with stakeholders will be key to maintaining a safe operating environment and protecting passengers, crew, and aircraft.
