The Occupant of the Golden Stool, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has described Merene Benyah as a suitable choice for the position of Non-Executive Board Member of AngloGold Ashanti.
His Majesty commended the company for its decision while welcoming her back to the company.
The comment follows her introduction to the King at the Manhyia Palace on May 13, 2026.
Otumfuo stated, “She is not new to AngloGold,” while recollecting her earlier tenure with the company.
“During the transformation, she was there. She comes back as a director, and that’s a good choice. Thank you very much for bringing her. I am sure your experience will be to the benefit of the company.”
The King further expressed his confidence in the capacity of the rest of the staff at the Obuasi Mine as he urged the Senior Vice President for the Africa Business Unit, Terry Strong, who was also present, to prioritise their welfare.
“You being the head of Africa, I want all the assurances for the support and encouragement. You have a good team, and the people there are well-trained and qualified. I am confident they will be able to run the mine.”
Otumfuo also reaffirmed his conviction about the viability of the mine, saying, “I have always believed Obuasi to be a viable mine. I believe in it, and I believe that it will work. It needs steady management and support from the mother company.”
Report
The visit to the Palace was used by AngloGold Ashanti Ghana to report on the progress of its operations.
Samuel Pobee, the Managing Director of the Obuasi Mine, reported positive output production compared to the same quarter last year.
“In terms of production, last quarter was another good one. We did better than the same quarter last year, and production is going well.”
Introducing the new Non-Executive Director, he said she is a seasoned lawyer and replaces Nana Otuo Sereboe following the expiration of his 10-year tenure.
He further expressed the profound appreciation of the company for the unflinching support of the King.
“We want to thank His Majesty for all the support AGA has been getting from him and the executive direction we get from him whenever the need arises.”
Mr Pobee also conveyed the goodwill message and prayer of the company to the King while wishing him well on his 76th birthday.
“We take this opportunity to express the whole company’s appreciation for what the Lord has done for the King. We pray that the good Lord will continue to direct him and give him wisdom. We collaborate with what has been said that he is the pillar of peace for this nation and Asanteman. May he continue to reign, and may God grant him more wisdom.”
In a brief speech, Terry Strong, the Senior Vice President of the Africa Business Unit of the company, reiterated his outfit’s gratitude to the Monarch.
“Your support has been tremendous for us individually and as a company. We thank you very much for that and look forward to working together in the future.”
The delegation from AngloGold Ashanti Ghana included Araba Attua-Afari, the Director of Legal Affairs; Emmanuel Baidoo, the Head of Community Relations for AngloGold Ashanti’s Africa Business Unit; Emmanuel Massey, the Stakeholder and Land Management Superintendent of AngloGold; and Edmund Oduro Agyei, the Community Relations Manager of AngloGold Obuasi Mine.
