The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has clarified that Matthew Nyindam, the MP for Kpandai, remains eligible to participate in parliamentary proceedings despite a recent court ruling annulling his election.

The High Court had ordered a rerun of the 2024 Kpandai election within 30 days, but it also imposed a seven-day stay of execution. Bagbin emphasized that until this period expires, Nyindam retains his parliamentary privileges.

This means Nyindam will continue to function as an MP until December 1, 2025, when the stay of execution concludes. The Speaker described attempts by some members of the Majority Caucus to prevent Nyindam from attending Parliament as premature.

The matter arose during a parliamentary session on November 26, when the Majority Chief Whip opposed Nyindam’s participation, citing the court’s annulment of his election. Despite this opposition, Nyindam was allowed to join debates and perform his legislative duties under the existing legal framework.

Bagbin stressed that the court’s ruling is an executive order rather than a declaratory judgment, meaning Nyindam’s membership and right to engage in parliamentary activities remain intact until the stay period ends.

The clarification puts to rest current disagreements in the House over Nyindam’s status and confirms that his role as an MP will continue temporarily as required by law.
