Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed is Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria
A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communication Team, Awo Kekeli, has questioned the suitability of Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, describing him as more of a grassroots politician than a career diplomat.
According to her, the concerns are not personal but stem from Baba Jamal’s political temperament and strong attachment to party grassroots activities.
Baba Jamal explains decision to abandon diplomatic post
Speaking in an interview on GHOne TV on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, Awo Kekeli said Baba Jamal thrives in active political engagements and may struggle with the nature of diplomatic work.
“It’s not like I have issues with his appointment, but I feel he’s not cut out for diplomacy. He’s a grassroots person, someone who feels more connected to the people,” she stated.
Awo Kekeli explained that diplomatic postings, particularly in a strategic country like Nigeria, can be isolating and may not suit someone who is used to constant political interactions.
“Diplomacy can be lonely. You’re there by yourself, seeing just a few people a day. He has always been very active in politics, so maybe he’s not too comfortable with that kind of environment,” Kekeli added.

Her comments come amid Baba Jamal’s decision to contest the NDC parliamentary primary in Ayawaso East, ahead of the March 3 by-election, triggered by the death of the constituency’s Member of Parliament, Naser Toure Mahama.
Baba Jamal has disclosed that he has taken a 10-day leave from his post as High Commissioner to focus on the primary, dismissing calls for his resignation.
He explained that his political ambition does not conflict with his diplomatic duties and stressed that he will only vacate his post if he emerges victorious in the parliamentary contest.
He also appealed to delegates to consider his experience and capacity to bring development to the constituency.
Meanwhile, five aspirants, aside Baba Jamal, have picked nomination forms to contest the NDC primary in Ayawaso East.
They include the party’s constituency chairman, Mohammed Ramme; Hajia Amina Adam, wife of the late MP; Dr Yakubu Azindow; Najib Mohammed Sani; and Salam Daru.
Despite the internal contest, Awo Kekeli expressed confidence that the NDC would retain the seat, describing Ayawaso East as a traditional stronghold of the party.
She urged party members to remain united and avoid actions that could dishonour the legacy of the late MP.
“Fourth-time MPs don’t come easy. He worked hard for his people. We should not muddy things or disturb his peace in the grave. Let his soul rest, knowing the constituency is in safe hands,” he said.
