Iceland’s Minister for Children, Ásthildur Lóa Thórsdóttir, has stepped down after admitting that she had a relationship with a 15-year-old boy more than three decades ago.
The revelation has sparked controversy, leading to her immediate resignation.
Speaking to Icelandic media, Thórsdóttir, now 58, disclosed that the relationship began when she was 22 and working as a counselor at a religious group the teenager attended.
She later gave birth to his child when he was 16, and she was 23.
Reflecting on the situation, Thórsdóttir acknowledged that times have changed and suggested she would have handled things differently today.
“It’s been 36 years, and a lot has changed. I would definitely approach these issues differently now,” she stated.
Iceland’s Prime Minister, Kristrún Frostadóttir, called the matter “serious” but refrained from making further comments out of respect for those involved.
However, she confirmed that she only learned of the situation on Thursday night. Shortly after, she summoned Thórsdóttir for a meeting, during which the minister tendered her resignation.
The resignation has sparked widespread debate in Iceland, raising questions about past relationships involving power dynamics and the standards expected of public officials.
