Uncle of the recovered baby has demanded for a DNA test

The family of a mother whose baby was allegedly stolen and later recovered at the Mamprobi Polyclinic has called for a DNA test to confirm the child’s identity before fully accepting custody.

The development follows an emotional reunification ceremony led by the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, who handed the baby back to the young mother at the facility in the Greater Accra Region after the child was retrieved.

However, speaking after the recovery, an in-law of the mother, who identified himself as the elder brother of the baby’s father, expressed reservations about the child’s identity and insisted on scientific confirmation.

“As of this moment, the baby is ours, but I want a DNA test done to confirm that the child being given to us is truly ours,” he said.

He explained that the family’s request was motivated by concerns about possible future legal and personal implications.

“You can’t just bring any child and tell us you found the baby and we should take the child home,” he stated.

“What if, in the next 10 years, we want to travel with the child, and things do not match? We need a DNA test to prove the child is ours.”

According to earlier reports, the suspect allegedly took advantage of a moment when the baby’s mother, who had undergone a caesarean section, was asleep after delivery, entered the ward, and left with the newborn without drawing attention.

The baby was later recovered and returned to the mother in a moment witnessed by hospital staff and security personnel, with officers from the Ghana Police Service intervening after tensions reportedly escalated at the facility.

The alleged suspect remains in custody, assisting with investigations, while the family says it will pursue further verification to ensure certainty over the child’s identity.
