Prof Ransford Edward Van Gyampo is the CEO of the Ghana Shippers’ Authority
A private citizen, Perpetual L Akwadaa, has petitioned President John Dramani Mahama to remove the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Shippers’ Authority (GSA), Prof Ransford Gyampo.
In her petition, which was sighted by GhanaWeb, on February 19, 2026, Akwadaa stated that the President must revoke Prof Gyampo’s appointment because he was implicated in the ‘Sex for Grade’ documentary by the BBC.
She argued that the appointment of Prof Gyampo to such a high position undermines the integrity of the public office and sends the wrong signal about the treatment of women in the country.
“In February 2025, Your Excellency appointed Prof Gyampo as the CEO of the Ghana Shippers Authority. This appointment raised significant commentary about propriety stemming from Prof Gyampo’s involvement in a sexual harassment scandal that shocked the conscience of this nation.
“Admittedly, the core mandate of the Shippers Authority is commerce-facing, and maybe the Government did not consider how appointing someone of Prof Gyampo’s profile may adversely affect other sectors of our holistic development drive. However, appointing a person publicly associated with sexual harassment allegations to a position of influence sends a harmful signal to the vulnerable that, in Ghana, power shields misconduct. Notably, it discourages reporting, emboldens abusers, and undermines years of progress towards gender equality and safe schools and workplaces,” she wrote.
She further stated that the President must sack Prof Gyampo to affirm that individuals who are implicated in sexual harassment or abuse have no place in public office.
She added that the revocation would reaffirm Ghana’s commitment to the protection of women and the girl child, in line with the 2025 Code of Conduct, which prohibits sexual harassment by public officials.
The BBC video, released in October 2019, was titied BBC Africa Eye’s Sex-for-
Grades Documentary.
It was part of a year-long investigation in which four academics were secretly filmed.
BBC journalists posed as prospective students to expose sexual harassment and misconduct at both the University of Ghana and the University of Lagos.
Professor Gyampo, along with his colleague, Dr Paul Kwame Butakor, were cleared by the University of Ghana of any wrongdoing in the exposé.
