A dispute over an unpaid GH¢50 debt has ended in tragedy in Tamale, leaving a man dead and several others in police custody.

According to a report on myjoyonline.com, on February 26, 2026, the victim had reportedly bought two tablets of Tramadol, a powerful opioid painkiller but failed to settle the payment.

What began as a dispute over the money is said to have escalated into a violent confrontation.

Police say the two main suspects, Abubakari Mohammed and Rasheed Sumaila, allegedly attacked the man during the argument, beating him severely before attempting to flee the area.

According to DSP Bawah Abdul Jalil, the leader of the IGP Special Operations Team, Abubakari Mohammed was arrested on the Accra-Kumasi highway while trying to escape.

Rasheed Sumaila was later apprehended while three others, including Sumaila’s father, were also arrested for allegedly obstructing police officers in the course of their duties.

Investigators say the dispute centered on the unpaid cost of the drugs.

“The deceased had purchased two tablets of Tramadol (120mg) at a cost of GH¢25.00 each but failed to make payment,” Abubakari Mohammed confessed to police.

According to DSP Bawah, beyond the fatal incident, DSP Bawah Abdul Jalil disclosed that his team carried out additional swoop operations in the area.

Six more suspects were arrested for the possession and sale of suspected Indian hemp and opioids, highlighting the growing concern over drug circulation in the community.

The victim’s body has been preserved, along with other exhibits retrieved from the suspects, to aid forensic examination and further investigations.

The incident has once again drawn attention to the dangerous consequences of drug abuse and the violence associated with it.
