The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has encouraged persons living around airports across the country to cultivate proper waste management.
In a notice issued on Monday, March 2, 2026, it said activities of residents living 13km away from such facilities can impact flight safety.
It explained that irresponsible handling of waste would attract birds which may in turn interfere with take-off and landing.
“Open waste dumps, uncovered slaughterhouses, fish markets, stagnant drains and certain farming practices attract birds.
“When birds gather, they may cross aircraft flight paths during take-off and landing, increasing the risk of bird strikes.”
It therefore called for the prioritizing of sustainable waste disposal.
“If you operate within 13 kilometres of an airport, ensure proper waste management and environmental control.”
