A mosque that began as a modest community project by ordinary Ghanaians has developed into what officials describe as one of the largest Islamic structures in West Africa, serving not only as a place of worship but also as a centre for training, dialogue and interfaith engagement.

Alhaji Osumanu Seidu, Executive Secretary of the Office of the National Chief Imam, shared these details in an exclusive interview by Graphic Online published on March 18, 2026, offering fresh insight into the mosque’s origins, scale and direction.

Alhaji Seidu said construction began around 2012 after a Ghanaian-led effort to develop the land stalled due to limited funds.

“This particular idea was started by the people of Ghana in their own small way, trying to make the best use of the land available to them,” he said. “We tried as hard as we could and got to a stage where we could not help it. We needed to get some support.”

He said support later came from the Turkish community, leading to the completion and official opening of the mosque in 2021.

The facility accommodates about 5,000 worshippers in its main prayer hall, with a total capacity of about 12,000 across the entire complex.

“When we are talking about the largest, we are not talking about Ghana; we are talking about West Africa,” Alhaji Seidu said.
