
Fuel Tanker accident burns driver alive, injures 2
Tragedy struck on Monday, July 29, 2024, at Asiakwa Junction on the Bunso-Accra Highway, when a devastating multi-car crash claimed the life of a taxi driver.
The accident occurred when a fully loaded petrol tanker’s bulk tank detached and careened out of control, colliding with several vehicles, including the taxi.
Eyewitnesses described the horrific scene as the tank landed on top of the taxi, registration number GW 3254-13, trapping the driver inside.
The vehicle erupted into flames, leaving the driver no chance of escape.
Firefighters from the Bunso Fire Station responded swiftly to contain the blaze, which had spread to other vehicles involved in the accident.
Despite their efforts, the taxi and its occupant were consumed by the inferno.
The Eastern Regional Fire Service confirmed the incident in a statement, revealing that two other people sustained injuries in the crash.
The accident involved a total of five vehicles, including the petrol tanker, two Mazda Demios, and a Hyundai truck.
The fire was brought under control within 35 minutes and fully extinguished after an hour and 15 minutes. The incident serves as a sobering reminder of the risks and unpredictability of road travel.
An investigation into the cause of the accident is likely to follow.
