Eight universities to compete in maiden Honda Football Championship in Tamale

Football enthusiasts and university students in Tamale and its environs are set for an exciting experience as Honda brings together eight universities for the maiden Honda Football Championship.

The tournament, aimed at promoting youth development, sportsmanship and community engagement, will be held at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium from Tuesday, March 24 to Saturday, March 28, 2026, between 8:30am and 5:30pm each day.

As part of activities, two top senior high school teams will feature in a curtain-raiser ahead of the final, setting the stage for what organisers expect to be a thrilling climax.

Participating institutions include the University of Ghana, University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), University for Development Studies (UDS), University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (UBIDS), Tamale Technical University and Bolgatanga Technical University.

The championship is open to the public at no cost, allowing football fans, students and residents to enjoy the matches without paying an admission fee.

Managing Director of Overseas Union Limited, authorised distributor of Honda motorcycles and power products in Ghana, F. Yao Dawson, underscored the company’s commitment to youth development.

“At Honda, we believe investing in young people is investing in the future of our society. The Honda Football Championship is more than just a competition; it is a platform to inspire leadership, teamwork and innovation among the youth,” he said.

He added that the initiative forms part of Honda’s broader efforts to promote positive social impact while empowering the next generation.

The general public is encouraged to attend and support the teams in what promises to be an electrifying football atmosphere in Tamale.
