Ghanaian music star, Black Sherif, has sparked a fresh debate ahead of the 2026 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) after publicly backing fellow artiste Wendy Shay for the coveted Artiste of the Year title.
Speaking on The Late Nite Celebrity Show with Kafui Dey, the “Sacrifice” hitmaker expressed concern over what he described as the lack of recognition for Wendy Shay in ongoing award conversations.
“I don’t like how people are not mentioning Wendy Shay ein name for the ‘Artist of the Year,’” he stated, calling attention to what he believes is an oversight in discussions around top contenders.
Beyond the awards, Black Sherif also used the moment to advocate for greater visibility and support for female artistes in Ghana’s music industry—a stance that has been widely praised online.
Wendy Shay’s recent achievements have positioned her as a strong contender in the TGMA race. The singer has enjoyed a remarkable year, marked by consistent hit releases and major performances.
Her fourth studio album, Ready, has reportedly surpassed 50 million streams across digital platforms and features collaborations with international and regional acts including Mavado, Olivetheboy, Phina, and Bedjine.
She also drew an impressive crowd of over 100,000 fans at her annual “Shay Concert” held at West Hills Mall in November 2025, further solidifying her influence and fan base.
In January 2026, Wendy Shay’s impact was recognised on a broader scale when she won “Best Female Artist in West Africa” at the All Africa Music Awards, cementing her status as one of the continent’s leading female performers.
With the TGMA fast approaching, Black Sherif’s endorsement has added fuel to an already competitive Artiste of the Year race. Fans and industry watchers have taken to social media to debate whether Wendy Shay’s achievements merit the top prize.
