DJ Mensah, a prominent member of the Akwaaba UK group, has firmly stated that the organisation will not reschedule its annual Independence Day event to accommodate Ghanaian dancehall artist Stonebwoy’s upcoming UK album tour on 8th March.
His comments came during an interview on Hitz FM on 20 February 2025, addressing claims of sabotage from Stonebwoy’s camp.
During the interview, DJ Mensah clarified that Akwaaba UK has no intentions of undermining Stonebwoy’s tour. However, he emphasised that their Independence Day celebration is a long-standing tradition, consistently held on the same date each year, and changing it is not an option.
He noted that the event has become a cornerstone in the UK’s Ghanaian community, marking the nation’s independence with entertainment that draws large audiences.
“We are not here to sabotage anybody. The event is going to happen, and we are not stepping down for anybody,” DJ Mensah asserted.
He further explained that planning for Akwaaba UK’s event had been underway long before Stonebwoy’s tour date was announced, making adjustments impossible at this stage.
This response follows accusations from Stonebwoy’s manager, Chief Stylz, who alleged that Akwaaba UK and its affiliate, Alordia, were deliberately attempting to sabotage Stonebwoy’s UK tour by scheduling their event on the same day.
According to Chief Stylz, the clash could potentially divide the audience and affect the success of Stonebwoy’s tour.
DJ Mensah addressed these concerns by reiterating Akwaaba UK’s openness to future collaborations with Stonebwoy.
He stated that while they would be willing to work with the musician on subsequent projects, it would not come at the expense of the organisation’s established events.
Industry observers have noted that scheduling conflicts are common in the entertainment scene, especially among major artists and event organisers. However, they argue that such situations can be resolved through strategic collaborations rather than public accusations.
Despite the ongoing tension, fans of both Akwaaba UK and Stonebwoy remain hopeful that future engagements will bring the two parties together. For now, all eyes are on 8th March, as both events are set to proceed as planned, leaving audiences to decide where their loyalties lie.
