AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine has reinforced its commitment to youth development and innovation with the successful hosting of its maiden Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Bootcamp in Obuasi.
A surge of creativity and technological curiosity defined the grand finale, where 36 pupils drawn from eight basic school STEM clubs across the Obuasi East and Obuasi municipalities showcased projects developed during an intensive five-day training programme.
The event attracted traditional authorities, education stakeholders, parents and community members, all of whom gathered to celebrate the ingenuity and promise of the young participants.
The bootcamp marks a significant milestone in the company’s sustained investment in education, particularly in advancing STEM learning within the Obuasi enclave.
Central to this effort is the Robotics Training Centre, built by the Obuasi Mine and commissioned on July 11, 2025, which continues to serve as a hub for hands-on learning and innovation. As the first facility of its kind in the Ashanti Region, the centre is already making a notable impact.
Guided by AngloGold Ashanti’s 10-year Socio-Economic Development Plan, the bootcamp provided practical training for students from Primary Four to JHS Two. Participants were introduced to a broad range of skills, including computational thinking, coding fundamentals, electronics, mechanical engineering, 3D design, robotics and creative problem-solving.
The programme also enhanced their communication and presentation skills, enabling them to confidently articulate their ideas.
Throughout the bootcamp, the students demonstrated discipline, resilience and a strong appetite for learning. Their final projects reflected not only technical competence but also a commitment to addressing real-life challenges within their communities.
Speaking at the event, the Community Relations Manager of AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine, Edmund Oduro Agyei, emphasised its purpose of “Empowering People and Advancing Societies,” noting that equipping young people with relevant skills in innovation and technology is essential to building a sustainable future for Obuasi and beyond.
He highlighted the growing influence of technology across sectors such as healthcare, education, agriculture and communication, stressing the importance of preparing the next generation to lead in an increasingly digital world.
He encouraged participants to remain curious, pursue their ambitions and take advantage of emerging opportunities in STEM fields, assuring them of continued support through future initiatives and partnerships.
The success of the programme was driven by collaboration with key stakeholders, including the DreamOval Foundation and the Ghana Education Service, as well as STEM coordinators, Obuasi Secondary Technical School, parents and community members.
The Obuasi Municipal Director of Education, George Alfred Koomson, commended AngloGold Ashanti for its commitment to advancing STEM education and nurturing young innovators in the area.
He praised the company’s sustained investment in youth development, describing the STEM Bootcamp as a timely and impactful intervention equipping students with critical skills in creativity, problem-solving and technology.
“AngloGold Ashanti has called for sustained stakeholder support to expand STEM initiatives across the region, noting that the Robotics Training Centre holds the potential to drive innovation not only in Obuasi but across Ghana,” he said.
