Ghanaian musician Dr Cryme, born Darlington Kwasi Agyekum, has cleared the air about his stage name, saying it has nothing to do with crime and is simply a creative artistic choice.
The rapper spoke on Angel FM in Kumasi, where he addressed the confusion that has followed his name for years.
“My name ‘CRYME’ is an abbreviation and is nothing closer to any criminal activity,” he said.
He explained that picking a unique name was something he thought about carefully when he was starting in music.
“As a creative person, when you are starting something, you have to come up with something unique, and this is the first and only name I have chosen for my music career,” he said.
He also broke down what the name actually means. “CRYME stands for Creative Rhymes You Most Enjoy,” he revealed.
Talking about the “Dr” in his name, he said it connects to the role he believes music should play in people’s lives.
“We all know doctors are people we visit when we are sick, so in my line of work, my music should be a source of motivation, encouragement, and healing,” he said.
He sees his music as something that helps people feel better. “My work is like therapy in music, a remedy for those who are weak in rhymes and in life,” he added.
He also mentioned that some people think “Dr” is short for his first name, Darlington, and said he does not mind at all.
“When others hear ‘Dr.,’ they think it is my first name, which is Darlington, and I accept it,” he said.
On why he chose such a name, he said he wanted to spark curiosity and get people talking.
“As humans, we have to be an abstract of what we are to spark curiosity and create conversations, and that is the reason behind my brand name,” he explained.
He also said the name has never caused him any trouble. “There has not been any situation where my choice of name has caused me issues,” he added.
