The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has directed the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to immediately withdraw letters issued on September 30 and October 1, 2025, concerning post-retirement contracts for academic senior members of public universities.

The directive follows a meeting between the Minister and the leadership of the University Teachers Association of Ghana, amid growing concerns over the policy’s implications for the tertiary education sector.

A statement signed by the Press Secretary to the Minister, Hashmin Mohammed, said the decision to withdraw the letters was taken pending further consultations with key stakeholders.

According to the statement, the move is intended “to ensure that any policy direction in this regard reflects broad consensus, promotes institutional sustainability, and serves the best interests of Ghana’s tertiary education sector.”

It added that the Ministry remained committed to an open and inclusive process in addressing issues affecting higher education.

“The Ministry of Education remains committed to a transparent, inclusive, and consultative approach in addressing matters affecting the higher education landscape,” the statement said.
