The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has reported the restoration of two additional units at the Akosombo Dam.

This brings the number of units currently generating power at the hydro plant to four.

In a Facebook post, the Minister said the third unit was restored during the day on April 28, while the fourth came back online around 9 p.m.

According to him, the progress marks an encouraging step toward strengthening power generation and reflects a continued commitment to maintaining a resilient power system.

“The technical team is currently working diligently to bring on the fifth unit. This progress underscores our resolve to come out of this unfortunate fire incident stronger, with a renewed focus on stability and reliability in power supply,” he stated.

A fire outbreak at the dam last week destroyed six power generation units, creating a power distribution gap of over 1,000 megawatts.

At a press briefing on Monday, Jinapor reported that the first unit was restored on Sunday, while the second was restored on Monday.

He explained that although all other plants have been running, the incident left a major deficit.

“The fire incident severely damaged the control room responsible for power evacuation. When power is generated from the hydro plant, it must first go to the control room. The control room then routes the power through the switchyard for distribution. So when you lose the control room, it means, at that moment, you cannot evacuate any power, thereby crippling a critical component of the transmission system and leaving over 1,000 megawatts of power stranded at Akosombo. Inevitably, it resulted in supply disruptions across the country.”
