The Ghana Education Service has commended the management of the Ghana Federation of American Football, GFAF, for its commitment to sports especially American football development within the country.
The Ghana Federation of American Football, a sole and recognised body by the National Sports Authority and Ministry of Sports and Recreation for championing the agenda of American football in Ghana has over the years supported coaches, players and media development with life-changing workshops and training programmes.
In 2025, the federation held an intensive training programme spanning fourteen (14) days at the University of Ghana Rugby Stadium for all sixteen (16) Regional Physical Education and Sports Coordinators. The training significantly enhanced their competencies and positioned them to effectively cascade the acquired knowledge and skills to the district and school levels within their respective jurisdictions.
As part of this year’s activities, the federation has outlined strategic structures and timelines in phases. These include, Phase 1: GFAF certification activation, phase 2: International body certification, phase 3: Guided practical; formation of regional teams, distribution of equipment, guided team development activities and phase 4: National flag football exhibition. These activities have been scheduled to commence from May 4th to December, 2026.
Mohammed Osman Nkosi, Secretary General of the Federation, emphasized that the training program is strategically designed to enable the establishment and effective operation of flag football teams across all sixteen regions. The initiative is focused on developing sustainable nationwide growth of the sport.
With Ghana firmly setting its sights on the Olympics 2028, where flag football will make its debut, he underscored the urgency and collective responsibility to build the capacity, systems, and talent pipeline necessary to compete at that level.
The Capacity Building Program will be headed by Chadwick Louisville, the Senior Coaching advisor of GFAF and Head Football Coach of West Potomac High School in Virginia, USA.
According to the Ghana Education Service, the current phase of this initiative by the federation is designed to train a total of 200 participants-including coaches, referees, physiotherapists, team managers, and media personnel-across all sixteen
regions of Ghana, while also facilitating the establishment of structured regional teams to strengthen the sport’s development nationwide.
The director of physical education and sports at the Ghana Education Service, Micheal Ntow Ayeh reaffirmed their position by supporting the federation’s efforts of promoting the sport, and human capacity.
“In alignment with this strategic direction, we wish to affirm our active participation and partnership with the Federation in advancing this capacity-building agenda. Our joint efforts are focused on organising and delivering training programmes aimed at equipping teachers-particularly Physical Education teachers-with the requisite skills, knowledge, and modem pedagogical approaches needed to enhance sports development and the delivery of Physical Education in schools”, he said.
He continued,” We are confident that this continued collaboration will contribute immensely to improving the quality of Physical Education and sports development nationwide, in line with the broader objectives of the Ghana Education Service”.
GFAF is currently led by NFL players Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah and Brian Asamoah II.
