The King of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has endorsed the government’s plan to develop the Green City Housing Project on a long-designated 200-acre parcel of land at Dedesua in the Ashanti Region, to be executed in phases.

President John Dramani Mahama cut the sod on May 9, 2026, to mark the start of construction on the land, which was released to the state by the Asantehene.

Ahead of the event, Minister for Works and Housing Kenneth Gilbert Adjei paid a courtesy call on the Manhyia Palace to brief Otumfuo on the project, introduce the heads of the Ministry’s agencies, and extend his felicitations.

Housing Project
Speaking at the palace, the Minister announced that the government plans to build 1,026 houses under the Green Housing Project, with completion expected in five to seven years.

Acknowledging the Asantehene’s displeasure with stalled projects, he said the initiative would be carried out in phases.

“The Ministry has handed over the land you offered us to State Housing. By your counsel and direction, they will commence work on it,” he said.

“Phase one involves 212 housing units. Work will start after the sod cutting and is expected to be completed by the close of next year for occupancy.”

He added that the State Housing Company has secured funding for the first phase.

Agencies
Gilbert used the occasion to introduce the heads of the various agencies making up the Ministry to the King.

He introduced John Sheriff Bawah as the MD for State Housing, Adam Mutawakilu as MD for Ghana Water Company Limited, Courage Nunekpeku as MD for TDC Ghana, Emmanuel Jeffrey as CEO of the Real Estate Agency Council (REAC) and Nana Yaa as Head of PWD.

He also introduced the heads of Rural Housing, Architectural & Engineering Services Limited, the Architect Registration Council, Community Water and Sanitation, and the Public Servants Housing Scheme.

Birthday Wishes
The Minister further congratulated His Majesty on his 76th birthday and prayed for his continued health and long life.

“We are here to wish our lord a happy birthday and extend our goodwill message. We seek longevity, good health, and strength for him,” he said.

Request for Land
The Minister also conveyed a request from TDC Ghana Limited for land to undertake housing projects, strategic land development, and essential infrastructure in the Ashanti Region.

“They are currently working in the Volta Region, constructing residences. They need your support to extend operations to the Ashanti Region. They have assured me that funds for the project are available,” he said.

Endorsement
The Asantehene expressed his satisfaction with the decision to develop the Dedesua land.

“It has been a long time since I released the Dedesua land. It has remained idle for too long. When John informed me they were ready to develop it, I was elated. Projects like this bring development. They will create jobs and increase accommodation,” he said.

His Majesty welcomed the phased approach and reiterated his stance against abandoned projects.

“I detest deception. If you are capable of building about 200 units, then do it,” he stated while disclosing plans to personally inspect the project at the end of the stipulated timeline.

Responding to TDC’s request, Otumfuo said he would ensure suitable land is allocated to the company.

He also urged the various agencies to give their best, noting that their individual roles are vital to driving development.
