The President of the Republic of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, has cautioned Ghanaians against using technological platforms to spread speeches and comments that could disturb public peace.

As part of efforts to promote national development, the President engaged the public on policies and key issues relating to the responsible use of the media.

He referenced the United States’ use of technology to track individuals whose comments incite violence through their IP addresses.

“The US Bureau now has the technology to use your IP number and find you wherever you are,” he stated.

As a warning to the public, President Mahama said similar technology could be used to trace individuals who make hateful comments online.

“I’m sending a signal to Ghanaians that we can find you. Those of you engaging in hate speech and related acts, we will use your IP number to trace you. And when we trace you, we will deal with you under the criminal code for inciting violence and disturbance,” the President stated.

An Internet Protocol (IP) address is a unique numerical label assigned to devices connected to a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication.

Many Ghanaians have reportedly welcomed the President’s comments, as the media continues to play a significant role in either the development or destruction of the nation.
