The family of Ghana’s first president, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, is in mourning following the passing of his eldest son, Professor Francis Nkrumah.
Professor Nkrumah, a respected pediatrician and public health specialist, died on June 30, 2024, at the age of 89. His death was announced by Indian author and editor Vijay Prashad on social media.
The late Professor Nkrumah was a prominent figure in Ghana’s medical community, serving as the longest-serving Director of the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research. He was also a founding member of the Pediatric Association of Ghana and the West African College of Physicians.
His brother, Sekou Nkrumah, paid tribute to him on Facebook, sharing a photo of Professor Nkrumah without a caption. The post has attracted an outpouring of condolences from friends and well-wishers.
The cause of Professor Nkrumah’s death is not yet known. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the medical community.
Kwame Nkrumah was a visionary Ghanaian politician, theorist, and revolutionary who spearheaded the Gold Coast’s fight for independence from British colonial rule. His leadership journey began in 1947 when he became the general secretary of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC).
Two years later, he founded the Convention Peoples’ Party (CPP) in June 1949, which became the vehicle for his nationalist agenda. Nkrumah’s political ascendancy continued as he became the prime minister of the Gold Coast in 1952, and finally, on March 6, 1957, he led Ghana to independence, becoming the country’s first prime minister and later its first president.
