Angry Residents Protest Reckless Driving on Kumasi-Techiman Highway
Last Friday, Sakam residents in the Offinso Municipality of the Ashanti Region staged a protest and blocked a portion of the Kumasi-Techiman highway. This protest was brought on by the untimely death of a 14-year-old girl who was the victim of careless driving, intensifying local residents’ resentment over the recurring accidents in the neighborhood. The demonstration, which featured passionate pleas for enhanced traffic safety regulations, brought attention to the urgent need for action to stop more fatalities.
Assemblyman Ibrahim Yogo emphasized the community’s ongoing requests to create speed ramps and emphasized that these actions have not yet been taken, even after informing the Assembly on several occasions.
Authorities used a combined force of police and military troops to quell the protest and bring peace back to the area. The fact that five people were later found and taken into custody in Offinso highlights how seriously the problem is being handled by the authorities.
Although there has been a brief respite since the route was reopened to traffic, the underlying problems still exist. In the upcoming days, the community intends to arrange a news conference to voice their concerns and demand specific action from pertinent stakeholders, as they are committed to addressing the underlying causes of the issue.Angry residents protest reckless driving on Kumasi-Techiman Highway 1
