The Upper East Region has recorded significant mineral discoveries, particularly gold, across several districts, positioning the area as a potential hub for mining activities.
According to Upper East Regional Minister Donatus Akamugri Atanga, seven out of the 15 District Assemblies and Municipalities have confirmed the presence of gold deposits.
He made this revelation during a media interaction at the proposed Bolgatanga Airport site on Saturday, March 29.
The minister highlighted the economic potential of these mineral discoveries, stating that they create opportunities for both miners and investors.
He emphasized that the construction of an airport in Bolgatanga would be a game-changer, facilitating the swift transportation of gold and other minerals to different parts of the country.
He also pointed out that an operational airport would provide a safer and more efficient alternative to road transport, reducing the risk of armed robbery incidents that miners and gold traders often face.
Calling on stakeholders to support the establishment of the Bolgatanga Airport, the minister underscored its strategic importance, not just for the mining sector but also for the broader economic development of the region.
He noted that Upper East serves as a gateway to neighboring Burkina Faso and Togo, making an airport in the region highly beneficial for trade and business expansion.
The discovery of gold in multiple districts is expected to attract more investment and boost economic activity in the region, further strengthening calls for infrastructure development to support the mining sector.
