Three teachers in Anwiankwanta, Ashanti Region, were arrested on July 8, 2024, for allegedly possessing answer keys to the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) on their phones.
According to the West African Examination Council (WAEC), the teachers were found with materials containing answers to the exam questions, breaching the exam’s integrity.
The Head of Public Relations at WAEC, John Kapi, confirmed that the teachers were handed over to the police and their phones seized as exhibits.
This incident comes after WAEC warned candidates, invigilators, and supervisors against bringing phones into the exam hall.
“Mobile phones and other electronic communication devices are prohibited at examination Centres. Neither supervisors, invigilators nor candidates are permitted to bring mobile phones into the examination halls.”
The arrest of the three teachers in Ashanti Region is a stern warning to others who might attempt to compromise the exam’s integrity. The BECE examination will continue until July 15, 2024, under strict supervision.
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced that more than 500,000 students will take the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) starting on Monday, July 8, 2024. This number includes both school and private candidates.
These candidates will be examined based on the newly introduced common core curriculum at 2,123 centres all over Ghana.
